BERMO Inc. was founded in 1947 by Fred Berdass. 

Fred’s ingenuity took the company from his humble garage to their Minneapolis, Minnesota, headquarters. BERMO has developed over the years into a vertically-integrated contract manufacturer specializing in sheet metal stamping and fabrication.

With in-house tooling, progressive stamping capabilities up to 600 tons, 12kW fiber laser cutting, CNC press brake forming, and automated welding systems, BERMO provides scalable, cost-effective production for both short and long runs.

BERMO's History: Our Company Timeline

1957 – Founding

  • Founded by Fred Berdass in Bloomington, Minnesota.
  • Started as a small toolmaking and stamping operation run from Fred’s garage.
  • Early products included automotive aftermarket parts such as curb scrapers.

1978 – Growth and Innovation

  • BERMO employed about 45 people, focused on stamping, welding, and tool building.
  • Specialized in soft tools for low-volume production.

1982 – Expansion into Progressive Tooling

  • Introduced progressive hard tools for high-volume stamping.
  • Acquired larger presses (up to 400 tons) to support growing demand.
  • Began serving electronics customers like Xerox, IBM, and Kodak.

1988–1989 – Major Relocation and Consolidation

  • Outgrew multiple facilities in Bloomington.
  • Purchased and moved into a new building in Circle Pines, Minnesota.
  • Combined operations into one climate-controlled facility with three 400-ton presses and 15 smaller presses.
  • Expanded services to include plastics, metal stamping, and assembly.

Late 1980s–Early 1990s – Electronics Boom

  • Despite an initial business slowdown, BERMO rebounded by winning major electronics contracts.
  • Became known as the “Keyboard King” producing frames for IBM and Digital Equipment Corporation.
  • Operated 24/7 to meet demand and added major clients including HP and Sun Microsystems, which became one of BERMO’s largest customers.

1990s – Global Expansion and Electronics Focus

  • Expanded manufacturing presence abroad to Scotland, Mexico, and California.
  • Doubled the size of the Circle Pines facility.
  • Built a new computer chassis facility in St. Cloud, Minnesota, producing nearly 2 million units for Intel over three years.
  • The company’s core business became electronics manufacturing.

2001–2003 – Dot-Com Crash and Refocus

  • The dot-com bubble burst severely impacted the electronics market.
  • BERMO sold or closed external facilities and consolidated operations back to Circle Pines and began rebuilding.
  • Shifted focus toward agriculture, lawn & garden, and industrial customers.

2003–Present – Diversification and Modernization

  • Expanded into transportation, medical equipment, and fitness equipment. Built a reputation for precision stamping, toolmaking, and welding expertise.
  • Continues to serve a diverse customer base across critical industries.
